Walking With The Buddha
No, I’ve not converted to Buddhism. The Buddha that I am speaking of is a really cool 12 year old kid that is like a person with more cynicism and realism than someone twice her age. Buddha is my friend Brad’s daughter and I recently filled in for him and took her to the OKC Thunder Kids Club event at the Oklahoma Science Museum. Or The Omniplex as I still call it.
So I picked Buddha up at Base Camp about 4:30 and we immediately headed to Ed Lynn’s Buffalo Wild Wings. If you just say Buffalo Wild Wings, Buddha is quick to correct you and point out that it’s not any of the other BWW’s that proliferate the area, she will only go to Ed’s BWW. So we walked in the door and sat with one of our preferred servers and ordered. Buddha went on to tell me about the various aspects of her day and all of the things she had planned for the upcoming event. She was telling me which players she hoped to encounter and that if Thundergirl Ashley was there we would probably have to get a picture for her Dad. Seems that she’s his favorite.
But knowing Buddha like I do, I knew that the main attraction for her that evening would be good ol’ Rumble the Bison. Buddha loves her Rumble like Brad and I love Babygoats. In fact, Buddha once even mused that Rumble was her Baby Goat! We arrived and even though Brad told me there would be a line I still wasn’t expecting this kind of turnout. The line was probably 200-300 people long and it was still half an hour until the doors opened. As we stodd there in line Buddha told me about all of the exhibits at the museum and sadly it seems like they are the same exhibits that were there when I was 12. Hey Museum Guys, we need new stuff!
We finally made our way to the door and Buddha flashed her Kids Club badge and we were ushered in. They still had my favorite exhibit from childhood, the Gravitram. They were now calling it Gravitram 2. It seems that it had been neglected as it was really shaky and by the end of the night it had completely stopped working. Hey Museum Guys, we need some WD-40 at the Gravitram and you might want to get Anthony Hopkins to take a peak at it as well because I saw several derailed balls lying on the bottom of the display.
We looked at various exhibits and went all the way through the criminal forensics display. That was certainly one of the newer things. You get to watch a film of an autopsy. You can’t beat that with a stick, Well I guess technically you can because there’s no one around to stop you from going all “whack a mole” on the exhibit if you wanted to.
Buddha got to see her Rumble and a couple of the Thunder players. I was impressed when she told me she got Reggie Jackson’s autograph… until I found out he’s just a basketball player and not THE Reggie Jackson. The night ended with some drinks and Sonic followed by the shouting of random guttural noises at other vehicles as we made our way down Northwest Highway towards her Mom’s house. All in all it was a lot more entertaining than I thought it would be
So if you’ve gotta hang out with a 12 year old, Buddha is a pretty good choice. Buddha was once telling me that her dream vacation would be for me and her old man to pick her up in an RV and travel the roads giving people a hard time. What scares me is that I kind of think we can make that happen.
